Flying Eagles Set for African Games Showdown in Ghana
Nigeria's Flying Eagles are ramping up their preparations for 2023 All Africa Games, with the team undergoing intensive training in Abuja under the guidance of head coach Ladan Bosso, who led the team to the FIFA U20 World Cup quarterfinals last year, is fine tuning his squad for the upcoming challenges in Accra, one of the host cities for the African Games. The team is scheduled to depart for Ghana on March 1, 2024, with an 18 player squad selected from an initial pool of 30.
Head coach Ladan Bosso shared insights into the selection process, highlighting a balanced mix of six players from last year's FIFA U20 World Cup squad, six from the Nduka Ugbade led Golden Eaglets, and the remaining six from various Nigerian leagues. This strategy aims to blend experience with emerging talent from across the country's football landscape.
The 2023 All African Games will feature nine teams, including host nations Ghana, Benin, Congo, Gambia, Nigeria, Senegal, Tunisia, South Sudan, and Uganda, divided into two groups. Nigeria finds itself in Group B alongside Senegal, Tunisia, Uganda, and South Sudan. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals.
Nigeria's campaign kicks off against Uganda on March 8, followed by matches against South Sudan on March 10, Senegal on March 12, and Tunisia on March 14. Despite Nigeria's rich football heritage, the country has only secured one football gold medal at the All Africa Games, setting the stage for the Flying Eagles to potentially add to this tally.
